What if Healing Didn't Have to Feel So Hard?
Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like you’re just… stuck?
You know the feeling. You’ve read the self-help books. You’ve listened to the podcasts. Maybe you’ve even been in therapy for years, doing the hard work, talking through the pain, trying to reframe your thoughts. And yet, there’s this heavy, stubborn knot in your chest that just won’t budge.
I hear this from my clients all the time. As a trauma therapist, I sit across from incredible, resilient people, veterans, first responders, survivors, who are doing everything “right,” but still feel trapped by their past.
It’s frustrating. It’s exhausting. And honestly? It’s not your fault.
Sometimes, our brains build walls that are so thick, so perfectly designed to protect us, that words alone just can’t get through them.
That’s exactly why I decided to bring Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy into my practice. And I want to talk to you about it,not with clinical jargon or confusing statistics, but just as one human to another.
The “Snow Globe” Effect
When people hear “psychedelic therapy,” they usually have one of two reactions. Either they think of the 1960s and tie-dye shirts, or they think it sounds intense and a little scary.
But I like to explain it like a snow globe.

Imagine your brain is a snow globe that’s been sitting on a shelf for years. The snow has settled into deep, rigid grooves at the bottom. Those grooves are your habitual thoughts: I’m not safe. I’m not enough. I have to be on guard. Every time a thought falls, it lands in the exact same groove.
Ketamine is like someone gently picking up the snow globe and giving it a shake.
For a few hours, the snow is suspended in the water. The rigid grooves disappear. You suddenly have this beautiful, spacious window where you can look at your life, your trauma, and yourself without the heavy filter of fear or shame.
It doesn’t erase your memories. It just temporarily turns down the volume on your inner critic and your brain’s alarm system. It gives you a breather.
“The medicine opens the door. Therapy helps you walk through it.”
You’re Not Doing It Alone
One of the biggest fears people have is losing control. I completely get that. The idea of being in an altered state can feel vulnerable.
But here’s the thing: you are never, ever alone in that room.
If you come to my office for a session, you’ll be in my cozy recliner (yes, the one with the really soft blanket). You’ll have an eye mask on and some beautiful, calming music playing. And I will be sitting right there with you for the entire three hours.
We don’t just take the medicine and hope for the best. We prepare beforehand. During the journey, if things feel overwhelming, I’m there to guide you using mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (which is just a fancy way of saying we learn to be kind to the different parts of yourself).
You are in the driver’s seat. I’m just the co-pilot with the map.
The Magic Happens Afterward
Here’s a secret about psychedelic therapy: the medicine isn’t the cure. You are the cure. The medicine just opens the door so you can walk through it.
The real magic actually happens in the days after the journey. For about 24 to 72 hours after a session, your brain is in this incredible state of flexibility. It’s like wet clay, ready to be reshaped.
That’s why we always meet again within a day or two for an integration session. We take all those profound insights you had in the chair and figure out how to weave them into your actual, everyday life. We use EMDR to help anchor those new, healthier pathways.
It’s the difference between having a great vacation and actually moving to a better city. We want you to live there.

Is It Right For You?
I’ll be honest, this isn’t a magic wand. It’s deep, profound work. And it’s not the right fit for everyone (which is why I always do a free screening first to make sure it’s safe for you medically and emotionally).
But if you’ve been feeling stuck. If you’re tired of talking in circles. If you’re carrying a weight that feels too heavy to hold anymore… this might be the gentle shake your snow globe needs.
Healing doesn’t always have to feel like a grueling uphill battle. Sometimes, it can feel like finally putting down a heavy backpack you forgot you were wearing.
If you’re curious, just reach out. We can grab a virtual coffee and chat about it. No pressure, no expectations. Just a conversation about how we can help you feel like you again.
Warmly,
Heleen
